A lovely day for gardening!
The (welly) boot was firmly on the other foot for 7 members of staff from Volunteer Centre Fife this week as they volunteered for the day at Falkland Palace Gardens! As part of their Volunteers’ Week programme, Volunteer Centre staff were sponsored to spend the day gardening in an effort to raise funds for Fife Young Carers. This was part of a wider programme of events organised by the Volunteer Centre last week to raise awareness of volunteer fundraisers.

Under the careful supervision of Sonia Ferras-Mana, head gardener at Falkland Palace, Volunteer Centre staff planted wild flowers in the orchard in order to promote it as a wildlife habitat. Sonia explained that wildflower meadows are an important habitat for many species of insects and birds, but that the number of such habitats has greatly diminished in recent years. As a result, Sonia said that the work done by Volunteer Centre Staff has ‘made such a big difference’, and that without the help of volunteers they would have struggled to achieve so much in the timescale.

Staff from Volunteer Centre Fife also greatly enjoyed their day away from the office, particularly given the fantastic weather! Innes Bracegirdle who works at the Volunteer Centre in Cupar said that ‘it was a great way to spend a day getting our hands dirty while helping to preserve an important Scottish habitat’
