Resource co-ordinator Drew Mayne told the Fife Herald he was "very proud" of the award. He said: "We had to go through a seven month process to prove to an external assessor from Volunteer Development Scotland that we were worthy of the award.
"It proves that we treat our volunteers well, from the recruitment process right through to the facilities we have on hand. The environmental aspect shows that we are an eco-friendly organisation. Last year we saved more than 100 tonnes of goods from going to landfill. I'm very proud of the award but it's down to the work of the volunteers — this place wouldn't survive without them."
Based on East Burnside, Castle's services include furniture repair, restoration and recycling, as well as portable appliance tests and fire risk assessments.
The organisation's award-winning volunteer scheme helps those with mental health difficulties return to the workplace in roles such as drivers, furniture restorers and support workers.
