Training

Volunteer Centre Fife offers ten courses on a wide range of volunteer matters. Participants can attend all ten or opt for those most relevant to thier needs.

Course 1 - Planning Strategically for Volunteer Involvement

Aim: To assist participants plan their volunteer programmes at strategic level, and establish appropriate frameworks for volunteering within their organisations.

The course will provide participants with:

  • An awareness of the aims and values which underpin their work with volunteers
  • An understanding of the management task and the role of volunteer management
  • Knowledge of how to create a volunteer framework appropriate to their organisation

Course 2 - Effective Volunteer Recruitment

Aim: To assist participants in creating motivating volunteer opportunities and identifying appropriate strategies to attract the right people to fill these voluntary roles.

The course will provide participants with:

  • Ideas for developing motivating voluntary opportunities within their organisation
  • The opportunity to examine different recruitment messages and marketing approaches
  • Knowledge and ideas of how to develop an appropriate recruitment strategy for their organisation

Course 3 - Matching Volunteers to Roles and Tasks

Aim: To explore issues and practice in the selection and matching of volunteers to appropriate tasks within the organisation.

The course will provide participants with:

  • Knowledge of how to create volunteer task descriptions/portfolio of volunteer opportunities
  • Knowledge of different selection methods with particular reference to interviewing volunteers
  • The opportunity to address issues around counselling out unsuitable volunteers
  • An awareness of local and national trends affecting volunteering

Course 4 - Increasing Volunteer Effectiveness through Training and Development

Aim: To explore ideas for the planning of effective training for volunteers and to increase knowledge and skills in planning and implementing an on-going training programme for volunteers.

The course will provide participants with:

  • Knowledge of how adults learn
  • An understanding of methods used to identify training needs of volunteers
  • The skills to design an effective volunteer training programmes including induction and on-going training
  • The opportunity to examine different training methods and techniques
  • Knowledge of how to evaluate the effectiveness of training

Course 5 - Supporting and Supervising Skills

Aim: To help participants develop their ideas, skills and strategies regarding the overall task of support and supervision of volunteers.

The course will provide participants with:

  • An understanding of the skills necessary to become more effective at providing appropriate support and supervision for volunteers
  • An awareness of how effective support and supervision strategies can enhance the volunteering experience for individuals
  • Knowledge of good practice in supporting and supervising volunteers


Course 6 - Developing Diversity within a Volunteer Programme

Aim: To explore issues relating to building diversity into a volunteer programme.

The course will provide participants with:

  • To increase an understanding of diversity
  • To build skills to map an organisations profile
  • To gain knowledge of the benefits of partnership working with different groups in the community
  • To explore issues in working with under represented groups

Course 7 - Health and Safety and Risk Management in Volunteer Programmes

Aim: This course aims to equip participants with the knowledge to address relevant health and safety issues which impact on volunteering in their setting and an overview of risk management.

The course will provide participants with:

  • An understanding of health and safety issues with regard to volunteering
  • Knowledge of the risk management process
  • Development of an action plan to implement appropriate health and safety and risk management strategies for their organisation

Course 8 - Motivation, Retention and Development of Volunteers

Aim: To explore the areas of motivation and development of volunteers within the general aim of identifying key ways of increasing volunteer retention within the organisation.

The course will provide participants with:

  • An understanding of some of the theories on motivation, linking these to volunteering
  • Different ways of recognising and rewarding volunteer commitment
  • An awareness of methods for volunteer development linked to volunteer motivations

Course 9 - Developing Volunteer Portfolios

Aim: To explore how a portfolio can be developed and structured to assist in the training and development of volunteers.

Objectives: By the end of the course the participant will:

  • Be aware of what a portfolio is and how it can be used
  • Be able to design a portfolio to match the requirements of volunteering in their organisation
  • Have considered the implications for the future development of portfolios

Course 10 - Creating Positive Volunteer-Staff Relations

Aim: The course aims to focus on addressing the issues surrounding volunteer-staff relations.

Objectives: The course will provide participants with:

  • Discussion of how the complex role of the volunteers manager is changing
  • Identification of the skills needed to ensure successful volunteer-staff relations
  • Exploring strategies for building effective volunteer-staff relations
