Castle Furniture Project got off to a flying start in 2008 thanks to staff from Timberland Europe who took time off from their autumn conference in St Andrews to volunteer in the Cupar-based charity’s warehouse. The charity uses volunteers all year round but this challenge required the use of forklift trucks and many extra hands to move portacabins and furniture in the warehouse to make better use of the available space. Castle collects and recycles unwanted furniture to provide a service for the community and to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. On a regular basis volunteers drive around the kingdom collecting furniture and white goods, carrying out repairs where necessary and then delivering the reconditioned items to local households. Silv Ingram, Manager of Castle Furniture Project, said “Castle’s objectives are to promote the welfare of people with mental health issues and to relieve poverty amongst the residents of North East Fife. Without volunteers, both on our Management Committee and in the warehouse, we simply could not function and fulfil our aims.” Every year the Timberland Corporation commits to allowing each member of staff to volunteer for up to 40 hours a year. This kind of commitment to their staff has allowed them to make a huge difference to communities all over the world. Although the Timberland Corporation has no direct links with Fife they felt it was right to give up a morning of their conference to help a local community project. So on a very chilly day in Late December 50 employees from Timberland descended onto the Castle Furniture project and within a few hours the warehouse was transformed. Volunteer Centre Fife helps to support a number of employer supported volunteering activities all across Fife.
