The Art of Volunteering

AWARDS NIGHT
7 JUNE 2007

To mark Volunteers' Week, among a range of activities, Volunteer Centre Fife held an Awards night at the Rothes Halls in Glenrothes for the 16 finalists from primary schools in Fife who had taken part in ‘The Art of Volunteering’ competition. The aim was to encourage interest in voluntary activity amongst primary age children and to recognise the work that schools do to encourage young people to become active citizens.

Three schools picked up their paint brushes and rose to the challenge: Castlehill Primary School (Cupar); Dunnikier Primary School (Kirkcaldy); and Kingsbarns Primary School ( St Andrews). Each school received a cheque for £40.00 as a donation as a thank you for their participation.

Sixteen finalists were chosen from the many excellent entries received. Judging proved to be very difficult in deed and eventually six overall winners were selected from the finalists.

Our photo shows the delighted winners with their prizes: certificate, Methil Moggie trophie and £10 gift voucher from WH Smith.

Unfortunately, Stephanie Warne, also one of our winners, was unable to attend.

A most enjoyable night was held at the Rothes Halls on 7 June to mark the occasion with finalists, parents and teachers taking part in a quiz with prizes and live entertainment by some pupils from Leslie Primary School.

Our Entertainment - Raising Awareness of Green Issues

Our live entertainment came in the shape of a presentation by some of the pupils from Leslie Primary School who volunteered to tell us about their work to achieve their Green Flag Eco status. The children (pictured below) showed us photos and drawings about their Eco learning during 2007. They had been very inspired by a trip to the Earthship, a house which is completely run on renewable energy, so much so that they set about designing their own Earthships.

The pupils had also been very concerned about disappearing habitats and took up the challenge of designing posters to advertise a local event run by the Fife Council Ranger Service – planting a wildlife meadow which they also participated it. The presentation was extremely well written and entertaining.

The evening’s theme of young people and their contribution to their communities culminated in a marvellous rendition of ‘Ma’ Green Granny’ by the pupils – with all the actions!

Margaret Johnston, the pupils’ teacher at Leslie Primary School, wrote the song which is sung to the tune of “Oh canny chuck yer grannie off the bus” and goes like this …

Ma’ Green Granny

Oh, ma granny thinks awbody should be green.

She went oot tae hae a meetin’ wi’ the Queen.

In their muckle 4 by 4’s

They rolled up at Lindores,

And the media aw’ roared,

“Disaster Scene!”

Oh, she had a wind turbine on her hoose,

But the blades they wis ayeways comin’ loose.

If ye looked oot o’ yer windaes,

Ye wid see them hittin’ chimneys,

An’ in Canada they even killed a moose.

Oh, she had a solar panel on the roof,

But a flyin’ stallion struck it wi’ its hoof.

He smashed it intae bits,

An’ ma granny she had fits,

An’ it hit ma grandpa’s heid an’ he said, Oof!”

Oh, ma granny she went on a litter pick,

An’ at it she wis reall awfu’ slick.

In the Back Braes fur oors,

She had picked that mony flowers

That the polis cam’ an put her in the nick!

Oh ma granny bought a sunhat at the school,

An’ she wore it wi’ her simit made o’ wool,

But it landed ow’er the wa’,

When she was playin’ dodgeba’

She was sunburnt on the napper- sae uncool!

Oh oor Granny is an’ Eco Warrior,

Though her efforts never get her very far.

She is ayewis oot in front,

Wi’ each famous green-ish stunt,

Oor Granny is an Eco Superstar!

Each winner received one of our fantastic bespoke Methil Moggies designed by Earthen Images in Markinch.

A huge thank you goes to all the children who participated in the competition.
